National Day of Prayer and Remembrance

Brent presided at the local broadcast of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's "National Day of Prayer and Remembrance" service that originated from the Tabernacle in Salt Lake City. A little-known fact is that the local members of the Church in New York City watched the Choir's "dry-run," which was exclusively shown at the stake center in a broadcast especially for them. The broadcast that was later made available on VHS tape and shown to the rest of the world was the second run-through of the service.

Perhaps the most poignant moment for Brent was observing the overflowing crowd of members as they stood and sang "America the Beatiful." Certain phrases from the hymn really resonated more powerfully than ever before, including: "Confirm thy soul in self-control, Thy liberty in law"; "Oh, beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife, Who more than self their country loved, And mercy more than life!"; "Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!"
